More than Just a Dog

I’d like to start this post with a quote

Dogs are not our whole life, but they make our lives whole.

I saw that on a typography art piece today.  I was in HomeGoods and there were many dog lover targeted items.  This quote hit it home for me.  My dogs really do make my life whole.  If it weren’t for them, I’d just be some lonely single 20 something girl, who went to work and came home to a dark apartment.  Instead I am greeted everyday by what seems like the two happiest creatures on the face of the planet.  They do make my life that much better.

Some dogs though, some dogs are more than just companions.  Some dogs have the power to heal, and the power to help.  I’m not saying my dogs don’t have this power, they certainly do make me feel all warm and fuzzy, help me fall asleep, and keep me in shape with daily walks.  But there are dogs out there that can sense seizures, heart attacks, and strokes coming on.  We’ve all seen seeing eye dogs, and dogs that aid people with other disabilities too.  I read an article today about dogs helping children learn to read and speak.  It is pretty amazing that an animal has the ability to do that, and they’re not even trying to do anything special but be a dog.

Even last night, I came across a youtube video about a boy that suffers from aneurysms, and how his shelter dog has allowed the boy to lead a semi normal life now.  When the symptoms of an aneurysm start coming on the dog alerts the boy’s mother.  If the boy collapses the dog knows to lay on the boy for body contact to help calm the boy down.  Some people are dependent on dogs, some people say dogs are family, I don’t know how anyone can say that a pet dog is just another animal.  Dogs are amazing creatures, and if you know someone that is struggling with disability or illness, try looking into comfort dogs, who knows maybe you’ll find a miracle with the help of a dog.
